Saturday August 14th Cub Scout pack 528 will be holding it’s annual summer campout for boys in grades 1-5 who are interested in scouting.

Calling all upcoming 1st, 2nd Graders and their parents who are interested in Cub Scouts! Come join us at our annual Summer Campout on August 14th at 6:30, and meet the Cub Scouts and leaders of Cub Scout Pack 528.

Primarily during the school year and at least once a month in Summer, Cub Scouts do fun things with other kids! They get to wear a cool uniform, go places, and see things. They play games, sports, do community service projects, and build things, like race cars and bird houses. Want to learn a secret code? Want to learn about wild animals? Go Cub Scouting!

There is a reason for everything boys do in Cub Scouting. Apart from the fun and excitement, the aim of Cub Scouting is to help boys grow into good citizens who are strong in character and personally fit. This is why we say that Cub Scouting is fun with a purpose.

Parents also take part in Pack and den leadership when you and your son(s) join as Tiger Cubs. Pack and den leadership are composed entirely of parent volunteers who enjoy sharing their time and resources to provide a quality Scouting program. Already know you want to be a leader? Just let us know when we meet you. We’ll have registration forms available for you and your son(s) to get started right away.

DeKalb county officials are proposing the closure of the Recreation Center at Mason Mill Park as well as another county rec center and pool (not in the 30033 area). Officials comment that there is no money in the budget to keep these centers open and they could close as early as July 1st. The county commission is expected to vote on the closures at their June 22nd meeting.

For more details, see the AJC article at: http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/dekalb-wants-to-close-548035.html.

Mason Mill Park has, of course, been the recent focus of a major redevelopment plan (see details). I haven’t seen any mention about other elements of the park than the Recreation Center (for example, the dog park, tennis center, etc.) or heard anything about what this should mean with regards to the redevelopment.

06.17.10 UPDATE: Just received this press release from County Commissioner Jeff Rader regarding Mason Mill Park improvements:

Mason Mill Park
The county has officially selected a contractor for construction to improve the day-use area of Mason Mill Park (30033). The construction costs, not to exceed $2.1 million, will be funded by the county parks bond.

The improvements include a full-scale play area, new dog park, relocated parking spaces, and improved storm water management. The day-use construction is the first phase of a $7 million master plan for the entire park. To see the plans for the day-use area and the entire park, see links at the bottom. The plans reflect the consensus of county citizens at five public meetings from September 2008 to February 2010.

In conjunction with the day-use renovations, PATH has contracted for a path over the railroad tracks in Mason Mill Park in order to connect that park to Medlock Park.

Seems a bit peculiar to be spending $2.1 million on a park while at the same time closing the recreation center there, but the county appears to be moving forward with the improvements to the park which is good news for the neighborhood.

06.21.10 UPDATE: WGCL is reporting that Mason Mill Rec Center may remain open after all. See the story: http://www.cbsatlanta.com/news/23980125/detail.html

As part of its 97 Days (and Ways) to Play, Fernbank Museum of Natural History will offer dads and families a unique opportunity to explore a variety of the big trucks and bulldozers that have triggered a giant “WOW!” out of kids and adults for generations.

Fernbank’s Dozer Day will be held June 20, 2010 from noon to 4 p.m. at Fernbank Museum in honor of Father’s Day. The first 500 children to arrive on June 20 will receive a commemorative “hard hat” with the purchase of Museum admission, and Radio Disney will be on-site from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. with music, games and giveaways.

During the Museum’s construction of its new Children’s Exhibition, which is scheduled to open in Spring 2011, and throughout last year’s construction of the Dinosaur Entrance Plaza, a variety of bulldozers, lifts, dump trucks, and more have often been seen on Fernbank’s property. Visitors often stop to take a look at the equipment, prompting Fernbank to conclude Dozer Day would be a unique Father’s Day event.

“Seeing how excited and interested children, and even grown men, get when they see something like a tractor or a lift made us realize that while we’re working to finish the Children’s Exhibition, there’s an element of curiosity and childhood joy that comes with exploring heavy equipment up-close,” said Jennifer Grant Warner, Fernbank’s Chief Programming Officer.

Construction trucks and equipment won’t be the only eye candy during Dozer Day, though. The Atlanta Fire Department will send firefighters and a truck, and DeKalb County’s sanitation department will send some vehicles, such as a dump truck and a garbage truck.

Dozer Day is included with Museum admission. Tickets are $15 for adults, $14 for students and seniors, $13 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for Museum Members and children ages 2 and under. Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located at 767 Clifton Road in Atlanta. For more information, visit fernbankmuseum.org/97days.
