3rd Annual Medlock Garden Tour Planning Meeting
A small group of neighbors has scheduled the first meeting of 2010 to begin planning the 3rd annual garden tour for the Medlock Park neighborhood. We welcome any neighbors, gardeners and non-gardeners, who would like to join the planning committee or who would like to sign up to assist closer to the 2010 summer event.
We will meet Saturday, February 27, at 2 p.m. If you are interested in more information including the meeting location, please contact Marie Hall at mhall@co.dekalb.ga.us, or Jean Cohen at jeanzb1@bellsouth.net. If you have a garden you would like to nominate for inclusion on the tour, or want to nominate a neighbor's garden, please send us the resident's name and street address. We look forward to sharing some lush green jewels!
Medlock Park Community Garden!
Medlock Park Community Garden is ready for sign-up. We will start with twenty plots the first year with the possibility of more once we get settled in. We need 20 people to commit to a plot for 2010. The deadline to reserve a plot is February 15.
ANNUAL FEES
To get our permit we will have to submit $400 to the county with the application. This includes a onetime registration fee of $200 plus the annual $200 fee for the space. The first twenty people will be named "founders" because they will be paying the one time registration fee...not that the title will mean anything, but you get the thanks of future gardeners! With 20 plots in the space, the fee per gardener will be $20 for 2010 plus the cost of water. The cost of water should be less than $5 per gardener for the entire year. After the first year, the annual permit fee paid to the county is $200. That's only $10 per gardener.
PLOTS
A .pdf map is attached with plot numbers. Plots (4 feet by 10 feet) will be assigned on a first come first served basis and the fee must be paid to hold the plot. [Download .pdf garden manual.] Once we get 20 committed people we will put in the permit application. Everyone will sign the guidelines and release forms and we will be ready to go. This first year people will pretty much be one their own in terms of building the plots but we can all work together in the common areas to make compost piles, install fence, and clear the paths between plots. We will be making this up as we go along and trying to get the bones of the garden put in, most community garden meetings will be held in the garden and it will be a hands-on project.
To hold a plot, send a check for $20.00 to Sharon Johnson 887 Gaylemont Circle Decatur 30033 and give a first, second and third choice plot number. Put on the description line of the check "Medlock Community Garden".
Contact Sharon Johnson (sblott.johnson@gmail.com) if you have questions.

MEETING NOTICE: Our October meeting will be held at (744 Willivee Drive) at 7:00p on Wednesday, October 28th.
08.10.09 - At our meeting on August 5th, we decided to change the name of the club to the North Decatur Greenspace Alliance in order to better represent the breadth of interests of the group. Suzan Rowe has created a brief survey meant to determine the level of interest that residents have in different projects. Please take a moment to fill it out.
MEETING NOTICE: Also, Margie Dodd has kindly offered to host the next meeting at her home (576 Willivee Drive) at 7:00p on Wednesday, August 26th. Plans for a fall plant swap will be at the top of the agenda as well as an update on plans for the community garden.
MEETING NOTICE: The next garden club meeting will be at 7:00p on Wednesday, August 5th at 709 Densley Drive in Clairmont Heights. We will continue our discussions on creating a community garden as well as exploring other activities as summarized in the notes from the last meeting (below).
07.23.09 - The formation of a community garden club is moving forward, slowly but surely. It is not a lack of energy but instead an abundance of possibilities that is responsible for the pace of the process. We have a wealth of talented people in this neighborhood and trying to get all those people going in the same direction is challenging.
We have identified some projects that the club is interested in, and a survey will be going out soon to get a better idea of what neighbors would like to see in the neighborhood and what kinds of projects potential members might want to work on. We hope to be able to create groups within the club to work on particular areas.
Here are some of the possibilities:
- A Community Vegetable Garden in Medlock Park.
- Working with the county to manage the use of the FEMA buy-out lots on Scott Circle, Hunting Valley Way, Desmond Drive and Densley Drive. We have discussed native wetlands plantings, fruit trees or other appropriate plantings.
- Working with area schools and the Farm-to-School program and the Jr. Master Gardeners program to promote healthy food in schools and introduce children to gardening.
- Maintaining marginal areas in the neighborhood such as plantings around entrance signs and medians.
- Helping with native plantings around the PATH and in Medlock Park.
- Promoting gardening in the neighborhood by supporting existing garden tours, getting together to visit other gardens, hosting plant swaps and hosting informative meetings.
The club is also looking into incorporating as a non-profit in order to be on better footing for grant applications and working with the county and other government agencies.
The next meeting will be in early August, 2009.
